EXPLORE LAGOON: PIONEER VILLAGE TOUR: Smokehouse

SMOKEHOUSE

As part of the "living museum" that Pioneer Village once was, this Smokehouse was used for demonstrations until the roof caught on fire.

"One of the first structures built in Midvale, Utah, about 1860, this log smokehouse is typical of those used by families to preserve their winter meat supplies. A smokehouse was vital to the well-being of the household during the hard winters when food supplies sometimes ran short. Some were larger, but this one represents the average size for a single family

A practical, but not so hygienic method of curing meat was to smoke it in long strips in the main room. Often before the smoking was really underway, flies would cover the strips. A fire was built inside the brick-lined fire circle where it was continuously tended. It smoldered for long periods before the meat was properly smoked."
