EXPLORE LAGOON: PIONEER VILLAGE TOUR: Pony Express Monument
PONY EXPRESS MONUMENT

This monument honoring the centennial of the Pony Express is from Pioneer Village's original location in Salt Lake City.

The plaque on top shows the founders, owners and operators of the Pony Express as well as a map of the cities the Pony Express ran through. On the top right corner it reads, "120 celebrated riders rode 650,000 miles with only one rider killed by Indians, one schedule not completed and one mail lost."
On the bottom it lists the leaders of the National Pony Express Centennial Association. Dwight D. Eisenhower was chairman with Waddell F. Smith as president, David R. Trevithick as vice president and director at large was Horace A. Sorenson who founded and operated Pioneer Village before it was relocated to Lagoon.
The plaque on the bottom of the monument reads:
"Though not immediately on the trail of the Pony Express, Pioneer Village was the headquarters of the National Pony Express Centennial Association. These plaques erected and sponsored by the Sons of Utah Pioneers."

Also located next to the monument and the Blacksmith Shop is a shady seating area and drinking fountains.
