HISTORY & INFO

Passengers on the Lagoon Miniature Railroad boarded the small train at a station across the walkway from the Bonanza Shooting Gallery. The train traveled around the outside of the north end of Pioneer Village.

The official name was the Lagoon Miniature Railroad but was nicknamed the Bamberger Railroad. The engine is one-of-a-kind and was modeled after a Cagney train. It was given the name No. 999 after the famous locomotive that was one of the fastest trains in its time.

The engine and tender were built in 1925 but might not have arrived at Lagoon until the 1930s or 40s. In 1966, it opened as the Picnic Train with the cars seen in the photos below. It took riders from the Midway to the Picnic Terraces. When the Picnic Train closed, the engine and tender was then displayed where Tidal Wave is now located. It was restored in 1974 and opened the next year as the Lagoon Miniature Railroad. In anticipation of the addition of Lagoon-A-Beach, the train was retired again and put in storage after the 1986 season. It was restored again and is now on display at the Model Train Museum in Pioneer Village.

It was originally built at the Bamberger Railroad Shops in Ogden. The Bamberger Railroad was the line running from Salt Lake City to Ogden. The owner Simon Bamberger started Lagoon to generate traffic on his railroad.
