ERASTUS BINGHAM CABIN

This is the home of Erastus Bingham who discovered copper in Bingham Canyon (and is one of my ancestors). This home has been featured here since Pioneer Village opened in 1976, but there has been talk recently about moving it back to Ogden. A 2005 Standard-Examiner article said work is under way to return the cabin to the site of the Bingham Fort and also mentions that Bingham died in this small home.

"Bingham Canyon was named after Erastus Bingham, who discovered remarkable mineral deposits in the canyon. He was unaware of the extent of his discovery, nor could he have guessed that his namesake canyon would one day be the site of one of the world's major mining operations - Kennecott Copper. This one-room log cabin was built in 1853 by Bingham, in North Ogden. It features saddle-notch corners. The furniture in the cabin, made of oak, ash and pine is presumed to have been constructed from crates used in shipping goods to Brigham Young."
