FARMINGTON – Lagoon, the popular amusement park and resort which is celebrating its centennial this year, will begin weekend operation this Saturday, with daily operation scheduled to get under way on May 23.

The park will be open at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through May 17.

New attractions this year include the Centennial Screamer, a 56-foot wheel that flings riders heels-over-head as it defies gravity and plunges upside-down on its dizzying flight.

A second thrill ride – which swings out over Lagoon’s lake – doesn’t have a name yet, and won’t be operational until later in May. As part of the centennial festivities, Lagoon is staging a name-the-ride contest. The guest who comes up with the best name will receive exciting prizes, including a season pass to the park.

Another contest, part of the season-long celebration, will be a daily drawing for a trip for two courtesy of Morris Travel to any of Morris’ destinations. All guests will be invited to fill out entry blanks for the daily give-away.

Other additions for the 1987 season include new games, new food items (including pizza-by-the-slice), new shows and convenient new restrooms at both ends of the midway.

The resort’s colorful gardens have been spruced up and a giant birthday cake will greet guests at the main entrance. Signs have also been placed around the park with information on the history.
